A Surprise Backyard Wedding
in Pasadena, California
Crystal and Sean’s at-home wedding in Pasadena, California was one of the most unique celebrations I’ve had the chance to photograph. What started as a Thanksgiving gathering at their family home quickly turned into a full surprise wedding, catching their guests completely off guard (but in the best way).
I was brought on just a few days before (literally days), coordinating with their planner (Michelle, who is fantastic by the way) late on Thanksgiving night to lock in the final details. Once everything was set, it was go time.
From there, the day moved fast. Crystal and Sean got ready, squeezed in about 10 minutes of portraits, and went straight into their ceremony, followed immediately by family photos and their grand entrance into the reception. No breaks, no downtime, just one moment flowing right into the next.
And somehow, through all of it, they made it feel effortless.
What stood out most was how grounded everything felt. Being in the comfort of their own home in Pasadena gave the entire day a sense of intimacy that you just can’t replicate at a traditional venue. It felt less like an event and more like a celebration that unfolded naturally.
As a Los Angeles wedding photographer, I shoot everything from large-scale venues to intimate at-home weddings like this, and days like Crystal and Sean’s always stand out. There’s something about being surrounded by familiar spaces and people that brings out a different kind of energy.
