Aara and Yash told me before we started that they were a little nervous about being in front of the camera. That lasted about five minutes. Once we started walking the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral and just talking, the nerves disappeared and everything became easy.
The National Cathedral is one of those locations that does a lot of the heavy lifting for you as a photographer. The stone arches, the cathedral exterior, the quiet Bishop's Garden tucked alongside it there's genuine variety within a relatively small area, and the light in the late afternoon gets soft and directional in a way that's hard to replicate anywhere else in DC.
What made this session stand out was how naturally Aara and Yash moved through all of it. No stiffness, no overthinking, just two people who are clearly comfortable with each other and let that show. By the time the sun started to drop, we had covered the whole property and every frame felt like it belonged to them specifically.
As a Washington DC engagement photographer, the National Cathedral is one of my favorite locations in the city. It's iconic without feeling overused, and it gives couples something that feels genuinely timeless rather than just trendy.

The Washington National Cathedral is one of the most stunning and architecturally rich locations for engagement photos in Washington DC. With its Gothic Revival exterior, intricate stone details, and the serene Bishop's Garden alongside it, the cathedral grounds offer a variety of distinct settings all within walking distance of each other.
Sessions here work especially well in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the stone exterior takes on a warm tone. The Bishop's Garden in particular offers shade, greenery, and a more intimate feel compared to the open cathedral front — giving couples two completely different environments to work with in a single session.
