How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost in Los Angeles?

If you’ve started looking for a wedding photographer in Los Angeles or in and around Southern California, you’ve probably noticed one thing right away… the pricing is kind of all over the place.

You might see someone charging $1,500, and then someone else at $6,000+ and think, “wait… what’s the difference here?”

I get this question a lot, so I want to break it down in a way that actually makes sense.

The Different Pricing Tiers

From what I’ve seen, most wedding photographers fall into a few general categories.

Under $2,500 (Beginner/Budget Wedding Photographer)
These are usually photographers who are newer or still building their portfolio. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it can be a bit of a gamble. Often times, I see this photographer being too focused on camera settings as opposed to capturing real moments skillfully (with good composition, lighting, etc.). There are certainly a handful of experienced bargain photographers, that can perform just as well as higher priced photographers, but these are few and far between. A good way to tell if someone is a less experienced photographer, is if their websites show few or no full wedding galleries, and doesn’t show photos for indoor coverage (as flash photography is a skill that many beginners lack). Weddings move fast, lighting changes constantly, and there aren’t really second chances, so when choosing an Under $2500, we can expect good image quality, but be prepared for a lack of artistry with a few risk key moments being missed.

Around $3,000–$5,000 (Mid-Range/Sweet Spot Wedding Photographer)
This is where a lot of working professionals land. At this point, you’re hiring photographer who has real experience with weddings, knows how to handle pressure, and can consistently deliver a full gallery. This photographer charges more because they have real business overhead (equipment/software, liability insurance, taxes, website, advertisting, contractors, etc.) because their livilihood depends on their craft. They live and breathe wedding photography and have back ups in place in case things do go wrong (backup equipment and storage, insurance. You are paying not only for the quality of their work, but for their experience and knowledge. These are the black belts of wedding photography and there are plenty of photographers in this range that produce work similar to those of the $5000+ range.

$5,000+ (Luxury Wedding Photographers, Celebrity Wedding Photographers)
This is where things start to feel more like an experience, not just coverage. You’re paying for consistency, direction when you need it, and someone who knows how to let moments happen naturally without forcing anything. Their social proof is not in their just in their images but in the community and trust they foster. There’s a good reason they have reputation and its because other photographers respect and hold their work in a higher regard. They aren’t necessarily more skilled than the mid-range photographer, but have more experience in more luxury settings. They don’t follow trends, they are the trend. They are the Photographer’s Photographer.

And then at the very top end, there are photographers charging $10,000, $15,000, even $20,000+, usually for luxury weddings, destination events, or photographers with a very established brand and demand.

Where Does Alex Lee Photo Fits Into This?

I’d say I fall somewhere between that mid-range and high-end range.

Most of the couples I work with aren’t just looking for someone to show up and take photos. They want to feel comfortable, not overly posed, and actually enjoy their day without thinking about a timeline every five minutes.

That’s why I structure my coverage a little differently.

Instead of building everything around strict hourly limits, I offer:

  • a shorter option for smaller or more condensed weddings

  • and a full day option that lets the day breathe a bit more

The goal is simple. I don’t want you stressing about whether we have enough time for photos. I’d rather you be present and trust that I’ve got it covered.

If you want to add things like a second photographer or a short wedding film, you can. But I try to keep everything straightforward and cost friendly especially when services are bundled.

What Most Couples End Up Spending

In Los Angeles, most couples I work with end up somewhere between $3,000 and $6,000 depending on what they value.

Of course, you’ll see options below that, and some well above it, even into the $20,000 range, but for most couples, that middle range is where experience, quality, and value tend to meet.

There’s no “right” number. It really comes down to what matters most to you.

If you connect with someone’s work and trust how they approach a wedding day, that’s usually the best sign you’re in the right place.
